25 New York Surveyors Complete Comprehensive Exam Prep and Certification Workshop with Franklin Surveys
Franklin Surveys is proud to announce the successful delivery of a comprehensive 10-week online course designed to prepare the next generation of New York land surveyors and civil engineers for professional certification.
Led by Franklin Surveys owner, Kevin Franklin, PLS, this program supported 25 participants from various departments with NY’s Department of Transportation – from environmental, traffic, and civil sectors. The series prepped participants for the “Fundamentals of Surveying” (FS) exam to earn the official Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) designation.
Professional Development in the Digital Space
With previous experience instructing in-person, Kevin Franklin adapted the curriculum for a digital environment. Conducted over Zoom from January through March 2026, the course covered in-depth topics from the history of surveying to the field’s advanced technology. Key modules included:
- Mathematical Foundations covering algebra, trigonometry, basic and analytical geometry, spherical trigonometry, linear algebra, and calculus.
- Measurement and Instrumentation including horizontal and vertical measurements, unit conversations, and surveying instruments and methods.
- Data Analysis and Computation including coordinate systems, traverse closure, error analysis, leveling, probability, and statistics.
- Advanced Mapping & Technology with topics including datums, map projections, GPS, photogrammetry, LiDAR, drones, CAD and GIS.
- Legal & Boundary Principles including the history and evolution of boundary surveys, PLSS, record research, legal descriptions, and easements.
- Professional Practice addressing construction and route surveys, project management, business communication, ethics, and safety.
The Final Exam In Practice
The program’s cornerstone was the final session which culminated in an FS Exam simulation, providing participants with hands-on experience and a comprehensive review of all workshop material to ensure total exam readiness. Franklin Surveys ensured that every participant walked away with the critical tools and knowledge needed to pass their certification.
