Environmental Engineering and River Restoration on the Moosup River in Plainfield, CT
Franklin Surveys conducted a detailed topographic and bathymetric survey of about 30 acres in and along the Moosup River in Plainfield. An environmental engineering project of this magnitude involves setting and locating hundreds of wetlands flags and establishing a control network spanning several properties. As part of this project, a dam was removed located a little ways downstream from the Brunswick Dam.
We appreciate the opportunity to be able to play some small part in the process of making tangible improvements to a waterway and fishery. This environmental engineering and river restoration project involved observation and mapping of the longitudinal profile of the river thalweg (deepest point, normally) and multiple river cross sections.
In this case, the area of interest ran along an abandoned railroad bed, which has since been converted to a trail. The line of sight along a railroad bed is of tremendous value to surveys, but it is important to be stealthy with control points in order to try and preserve them for future use. Observing good swing ties helps!
