On Land Surveying Projects

Land Surveying projects come in all shapes and sizes.  That’s a good thing, because it helps keep life interesting for us.  Moving from town to town, exploring woods or pacing on pavement, the view from the “office” window changes constantly.  With that perk comes the reality that some jobs are more difficult than others.

Large-scale projects can be overwhelming when you arrive on site for the first day of fieldwork.  A sensation of “What did I get myself into?” and “Did I budget enough to cover my time?”  is natural.  At those moments, I am grateful for what I have learned from the surveyors who mentored me, particularly one who shared a most helpful mantra:  Easy to Hard.

Start your projects thinking “Easy to Hard”

Easy to Hard is the best way to start most any job, especially a large and complex one.  20 acres of high detail mapping needed in a dense urban environment?  300 acres of never before surveyed farmland?  No problem.  Go Easy to Hard.  Pick the area with the least complexity.  That part where you need to shimmy out onto a ledge or put on waders to get a shot can wait.  Put in a couple of points and get to work.

What I’ve found is that as I get going, at the same time I’m thinking about those more difficult areas and how best to tackle them.  Rather than worry about difficulties, start working and start thinking about solutions.  Easy to Hard.  Thanks, Peter.
